Duku Duku base was situated in the Duku Duku forests of Northern KwaZulu/Natal and the base was named after it’s location.
Duku Duku was a training area under the Training Wing of 1 Reconnaissance Regiment and it was also the location at which 5 Reconnaissance Commando was originally based for a short period of time prior to being relocated to Phalaborwa.
Duku Duku was primarily used as the location where the Special Forces Pre-selection and Selection courses took place, in addition to a number of other training courses during the Basic Operators Training Cycle. Certain advanced courses were conducted there too.
The base consisted of mostly pre-fabricated houses, bungalows and other rudimentary structures.
